Dressing Up

As you know, it has been quite a while since we posted to our blog.  Hopefully, some of you are still checking it.
Our kids like to dress up.  Not that anyone could blame them.  They have a mother who is handy on the sewing machine and likes to make costumes for them as much as they like to wear them.

I would have posted some pictures from Christmas, but Christmas is so long ago now that it seemed wrong to do so.  These will have to do.

In other news, my supervisor has informed me that I have all of the original content I need for my dissertation.  (Do I hear three cheers?)  I am now working on putting all of the pieces together in to a single document.  Hopefully, I can get this done soon.  If things go as planned, I will finally have a summer without the dissertation hanging over my head.

Winter Concert

Last night L participated in his school’s winter concert.  They performed the “Snow Party” inspired by the book by Harriet Ziefert.  His class did a great job singing “La Neige Tombe”(The Snow Falls).  Our family was very proud of L; he was the only one in his class with a speaking part.

Madame B. his teacher said that L had earned the honour.  I am assuming for the same reasons that she wants to clone him 19 times; L is very respectful, obedient and works hard at school.

You did a great job L!

Halloween

K woke up this morning all sad that Halloween was over and she would have to wait a whole year to get more treats.  L had a school party and K had a party at her dance class which wasn’t cancelled believe it or not. Only 2 kids showed up at K’s dance class I guess the temptation for candy was too good to pass up.  I must be a stick in the mud mom because I think the candies they got from 2 dozen houses is plenty.  Although 2 of those houses were family so those treat bags were extra special (thanks guys) and the lady from next door dropped off a large goody bag for each of the kids before they went out for the evening.

We had Strawberry Shortcake although without the hat we had lots of Raggedy Anne comments.  I just didn’t feel like making a hat.  I was talking to another mom at dance class and she had paid $50 for her daughter’s Strawberry Shortcake costume.  Commercialism what else can be said.  “Bee” didn’t come with us but K was pretty tired by the time we got home and so the happy smiles came out when she discovered her blanket in the dining room.

Mr Shark was fierce.  We actually made this costume in the spring for a dress-up day in Kindergarten, thankfully he was more than happy to wear it again.

Look 2 Wheels!

It’s done, just like when he finally walked there were no mishaps, starting, stopping, not tippy at all.  We have been biking to school (about 1 mile) since classes started.  It has been really good practice for him.  The past 6 weeks I have been calling him Stealth Rider; when he rides on 2 wheels only I can’t hear him behind me.

(Bribery was a factor in this achievement.)

She’s Three

It’s hard to imagine that K has been with us for for only three years, I can’t remember life without her.  She is such a delight, bouncing with energy and joy.  She loves her ballet classes which she finally can claim as “all mine”, instead of waiting for L to be done his stuff.

To her the whole world is something to be discovered.  She is getting braver in her discoveries too; cats are now delightful especially Twinkle and Sunshine.

With L in school she has become my little shadow which is lots of fun, but terrifying as well.

She loves to have tea parties, play with play dough and her latest past time is playing with spoons.  The spoons are characters, talk to each other and make phone calls. Her favourite song is Down by the Bay and “choir music”.  She is already keeping time and practicing her conducting skills. She still loves “Bee”, I don’t think we are parting with that blanket any time soon.

Happy Birthday K, I’m so glad that we get to be part of your life.

Summer

The nights are getting cooler, there have been fewer days that are warmer than 25 degrees and I’ve broken out the long pants, but I’m not ready for autumn.  I have had a lot of fun this summer, but there are a few more things that I would like to do, for example how about a day trip to Grand Beach?  Before I get ahead of myself I am going to reminisce about another fun camping trip that we had August long weekend.

It started out cold and rainy.  I am beginning to fear that those dark clouds are following us around, both camping trips this summer we have set up and had supper in the rain.  Thanks to mom’s shade/rain tent we have stayed relatively dry.

And so we had to find ways to keep ourselves busy.  We didn’t have alot of books along but thankfully there were enough readers that the same person didn’t have to read the books too many times.  When there was no one free to read, L and L could act out Mo Willems “Watch Me Throw the Ball” and keep themselves occupied.

Eventually the sun came out and everyone went for a short hike.  We had some trusty navigators and scouts that kept a lookout for trail markers.

Saturday the fisherman all reported back how warm the lake had been so Sunday when the sun shone we headed to the beach.  Unfortunately when the sun shines the water feels colder so we didn’t spend very much time in the water.  But despite the rain we made some memories, L got the hang of riding his bike with C and I had many helpers in picking a pail of chokecherries.

Celebrating a Birthday with…Fish

About two weeks ago we made the trip to Riding Mountain to help Grandma celebrate her birthday.

After having some cake, Uncle B took “the menfolk” to a prime fishing spot.  We kept about a dozen fish, but threw back a bunch more.  The fish were so keen on biting that you could see them just beneath the surface following the lure.
Being a rather inexperienced fisherman, Uncle B then had to give me some instructions about how to fillet the catch.
L, K, and T had a great time together.  At one point, K and T decided that Grandma’s treadmill could also be used in place of monkey bars.
