“Talking to Americans”

L and I were at the bank today. L was enjoying his complimentary lollipop and chatting away to his reflection in the glass door. The bank employee who was helping me asked if L spoke 2 languages… English and Canadian.

  1. Wow…that is a stellar example of a ‘typical American’. 🙂 Made me laugh out loud – I too am curious…what did you say?! 🙂

  2. I was actually expecting him to say English and French. When he said Canadian all I could think of was “he didn’t actually say Canadian, how ignorant can a person be”. I couldn’t very well say that out loud. I have to admit that I couldn’t think of anything clever to say, I think “no we just speak English” came out of my mouth. Lowell said that I should have said that he speaks American and Canadian.

  3. Lowell’s response is good.

I think I’d have probably just said: “Canadian?” to see whether the person realized that what they said was stupid. Maybe I’d have pushed it a little further, but that’d depend on the person.

  4. Reminds me of when we were in San Diego at the mall and a local said “I wish I knew how to say hi to you in Canadian, if my friend had been here, he would know how to say hi in Canadian he knew how to say ‘Hi’ in all kinds of languages” I just remember thinking he did not say what I think he did, he didn’t say a language yet, he must be confused.

  5. Hi Pam. Just checked out your blog to see if you were in Winnipeg. Helen, Donna and I are sewing at my house on Saturday. We will miss you more than usual. 😉 Linda
